3 Questions Physicians Commonly Ask

1. When should I start looking for an employer?

As early as possible. If you are on a J-1 visa, you will need to file for a waiver before the end of your residency, so you should start in your second year and sometimes even at the end of your first year. However, we know it is not always feasible to start this early. Talk to one of our immigration attorneys about what is the right thing for you.

2. How long does the process take?

It depends on your individual circumstances. Some cases may take only a few days or weeks to process while other cases may take months. Therefore, it is really important to have a quality immigration attorney who knows how to effectively maneuver the regulatory issues that affect physicians, evaluate your case, and give you a complete strategy from start to finish that will work for you.

3. Is the process expensive, and who pays for it: me or the hospital?

Although retaining a quality immigration attorney who knows how to effectively maneuver the regulatory issues that affect physicians and get reliable and fast results costs money, it is not as much as you may think. In many cases, the hospital will pay for our services, but it depends on your particular circumstances and what you are able to negotiate. Even if you have to pay for some of the process, the cost will be offset by the fact that you will obtain a highly paid job more quickly. One month of delay in your visa will cost you at least $10,000 in lost salary if you are a primary-care physician. It will cost you a lot more if you are a specialist. Depending on your visa, you may be asked to leave the country in order to re-enter at a later date. If your immigration needs are not handled correctly, you may be stuck outside the country until certain provisions are met – which is just not worth the hassle to you after all you have invested here.
