Exit of Homeland Security Secretary Signals Tougher Direction on Immigration Policy

Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen resigned from her position last Sunday. Subsequently, the Trump administration continued its leadership purge of the Department of Homeland Security and removed Secret Service Director Randolph “Tex” Alles the next day. This series of ousters is a result of the President’s plan to follow a “tougher direction” on immigration.

What could happen with a “tougher direction” on immigration?

“Zero Tolerance” policy may come back:

Immigration advocacy groups fear for a potential resumption of the “zero tolerance” policy under former Attorney General Jeff Sessions. The policy led to the separation of thousands of migrant families.

Closure of border could happen:

President Trump might make good on the threats he made in recent months to close all ports of entry at the southern border. This could result in a logistical and economic disaster – our last blog post discusses the possibility further.

Imposition of Mexican auto tariffs:

President Trump threatened to impose a 25% tariff on all automobiles made in Mexico and shipped into America. The tariff would “supersede” the new trade agreement the administration negotiated with Mexico and Canada last year that specifically exempts a certain number of vehicles from any new tariffs.

Further curb of asylum:

The administration’s pursuit to limit the number of people seeking asylum is ongoing. It may now be considering changes to executive decisions made by past presidents. These changes could include deputizing Customs and Border Patrol agents to assume a heavier role in determining whether asylum claimants have a credible claim.   If you, or someone you know, are having issues with immigration, don’t bet on the laws to change – policy will only get tougher under the current President!
